Living in Manchester
Manchester is listed among the world's top 10 destinations. It's the UK's most visited city for overseas tourists after London. It's also England's "second city" and the unofficial "capital of the North".
Healthcare in Manchester
The National Health Service (NHS) is the UK’s state healthcare system providing a wide range of services including appointments with a doctor, hospital treatment and dental care. You should register with a doctor as soon as possible after your arrival in Manchester. Here at Think English, we will be able to advise on this and may recommend a GP practice.
Those applying for a student visa and coming to the UK for 6 months or longer will be required to pay £470 per year for the duration the visa will be granted.
If you apply for your visa from overseas and it is granted for less than six months or you are required to make a number of occasional visits to the UK for short study periods, you are advised to take out medical insurance as you will be liable for NHS charges for the treatment you receive in the UK except for in a medical emergency and this is limited.
Transport in Manchester
Manchester is a relatively compact city with excellent transport links and the majority of the city is very walkable.
We have an excellent road network, a tram network reaching from Altrincham and Manchester Airport to Rochdale and Bury, an extensive bus network including a night bus service (which is one of the most extensive outside London) and an impressive system of cycle lanes around the city so you can cycle everywhere!
There are aslo two mainline railway stations in the centre and a world-class airport just a 15-minute drive from the city.
Things To Do in Manchester
Manchester has a large retail environment both in the city centre and in the surrounding areas. The city's shopping centre, the Arndale, is filled with many well-known retailers with more (such as Harrods and Selfridges) only a short walk away .
The Northern Quarter is a lively and vibrant neighbourhood near Manchester city centre. It is home to many independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants and bustling music venues. It is also the home of Afflecks, a well known indoor market.
Additionally, we have the Trafford Centre, one of the biggest and most popular shopping centres in the country where other activities such as LegoLand Discovery Centre, the Sea Life Centre and Chill Factore are based.
We also boast many cultural activities with numerous museums, art galleries and theatres all over the Greater Manchester area.
If you are more of an outdoors person, the Peak District is less than an hour’s drive away from Manchester and is great for a day out in the countryside.
Accomodation
Renting a room, or a flat, through an estate agent or directly from a private landlord is one of the most common ways to find accommodation in Manchester. There are many good sources to help you to find the type of accommodation you want at a price that fits your budget.
Spare Room
Spare Room is an accommodation website, like Zoopla and RightMove, except this one focuses on shared accommodation. If you have a smaller budget, and don’t mind sharing a house or a flat with other people, this is ideal. One of the benefits of Spare Room is that you’ll normally find cheaper accommodation, and sharing a flat can have the benefit of making you speak English outside the classroom.
Estate Agents
There are a number of estate agents who can help you find accommodation for a fee.
As Manchester is home to a large number of students and professionals who have moved to the area to pursue their careers, flat sharing is very common in the city. There are a number of estate agents that specialise in putting like-minded individuals in contact to be able to secure a home together and therefore split rent and bills to make it more affordable for both parties.
