Why do people learn English? Not everyone lives in a country that speaks English, so why is it useful to learn English? Well, there are many, many good reasons why learning English can really benefit you.
First of all, English is such a big language, many, many people round the world DO speak English. This means you are always close to someone who will have some level of English. In business, this means that companies around the world are on the lookout for talent that are not only good at their roles, but also able to speak across borders in order to help their business grow.
Being bilingual has been proven to help you at work, and not just for the obvious reasons. People who speak more than one language are much better at concentrating, being good at multi-tasking, and generally being a better listener. Though this last one is a skill also useful outside of work!
Travel is another reason why learning English is useful. As commented on before, many people around the world speak English now. Indeed, there are more people who speak English as a second language than there are people who speak English as a native speaker! So truly, wherever you are in the world, there will be someone not too far away who you will be able to communicate with. Let’s face it, visiting a new country and not being able to have a conversation really isn’t a lot of fun. By learning English, there is always the opportunity that whilst travelling you will meet people you can speak to. You never know, they may become excellent travel companions, or even life-long friends!
Finally, learning a new language can also help as you get older. Learning a new language has been shown to slow down your brain's ageing process! Yes, learning a new language can actually help keep your mind young!
