Further Leave to Remain

CEFR Level Required: A1

Exam: 6 minutes speaking and listening

  • Family life as a partner of a settled person (Spouse/Partner)

  • Family life as a parent (Parent of a dependent)

You need to take: GESE Grade 2

British Citizenship

CEFR Level Required: B1

Exam: 10 minutes speaking and listening

To become a new British citizen through Naturalisation

You need to take: GESE Grade 5

Further Leave to Remain Visa Extension

CEFR Level Required: A2

Exam: 7 minutes speaking and listening

An A2 English language SELT is required for family route Leave to Remain applications after 2.5 years in the UK.

You need to take: GESE Grade 3

Indefinite Leave to Remain ILR

CEFR Level Required: B1

Exam: 10 minutes speaking and listening

You need to take: GESE Grade 5

About the Exam ​

 

GESE Grade 2 and 3 requires you to have a conversation with the examiner of up to 6 or 7 minutes. You will be expected to use specific communication skills and meet specific language requirements.

For GESE Grade 5 you will;

Topic: You will choose a topic in advance and you will talk about this during the test. You will need to prepare a Topic Sheet in advance and take it with you to the test. You should also choose 5 mini topics around your main topic. 

​

Conversation: You'll have a short conversation with the examiner about two things. The examiner chooses the 2 topics from a list of 6 subjects such as:

​

  • Festivals

  • Means of transport

  • Special occasions, e.g. birthdays

  • Entertainment, e.g. cinema, television, clubs

  • Music

  • Recent personal experiences
